Nestled amid towering high-rise buildings of New York City, the USA’s largest city, Central Park is the largest urban park in the USA. Sheltered from the commotion of over eight-million New Yorkers hustling about its outskirts, the Park’s ubiquitous charm offers a gratifying retreat. An estimated 25-million people visit the Park each year, and it’s no wonder. The variety of recreational, cultural, educational, and community events is just as diverse as Park visitors. Several hotels and shops are within walking distance from the Park’s 843 enchanting acres (3.4 km2). Others are just a short taxi-cab or bus ride away–a traveler’s delight!

Loeb Boathouse overlooks the still waters of Lake More. Many guests enjoy fine cuisine in one of several formal dining rooms. Others, warmed by overhead heat lamps, prefer a lighter meal on the outdoor terrace. Rowboats and Venetian gondolas add a romantic touch to the serene landscape.

The Park’s compelling ambiance sets the stage for many movie and television scenes. Visiting there you might recognize its infamous New York City skyline, bridges, fountains, sculptures, the Victorian carousal, Egyptian obelisk, Shakespearean Castle, or perhaps a dismal fog and dimly-lit trail reminiscent of a mysterious and grisly tale. Guided tours are available to explore these attractions for about $20 per person.

Hot dog stands, a well-known icon in and around New York City, can be spotted throughout the Park. Visitors often find themselves in search of the perfect hot dog. When they do, favorite condiments such as mustard, ketchup, sauerkraut, chili, cheese, relish, and onions are piled high!

Fifty-eight miles of paths lead the way through 136 wooded acres, providing a tranquil sanctuary for native wildlife, and over 250 acres of lush gardens, sweeping meadows, and manicured lawns. The Park is more than just a playground for joggers, bicyclers, skaters, and horseback riders. It offers a restful pastime for nannies pushing strollers, the frail feeding pigeons, and students reading books. Dogs are walked. Children play ball. Birdwatchers look to the sky in search of native and migratory birds. New Yorkers mingle with international visitors as horse-drawn carriages pass by.

Niagara Falls is one of the great natural wonders of the world. Over one million gallons (4 million liters) of water per second pour over a 180 feet (60 m) high cliff that is nearly 0.6 miles (1 km) wide. The incessantly pounding water forms a continuous spray that enshrouds the Niagara gorge in a perpetual mist decorated with shining rainbows. It is a spectacular sight.
Bridal Veil Falls

Niagara Falls is located about 15 miles north of Buffalo, New York, 150 miles south of Toronto, Canada and about 350 miles northwest of New York City. Unlike other natural wonders that are in isolated inaccessible locations, the Niagara Falls are located in the center of a small city. Actually, there are two cities surrounding the falls. Niagara Falls, New York lies on the US side of the river and Niagara Falls, Ontario is on the Canadian side.

The twin cities of Niagara Falls are known as the “Honeymoon Cities” because of their past popularity as a honeymoon destination for newly wed couples. The best time to visit is during the summer when all of the attractions are open, but try to avoid weekends. Weekdays are usually much less crowded. During cold winters, the river below the falls freezes and the spray forms 100 feet high ice mountains that are quite spectacular to behold.

The “Maid of the Mist” boats are an exciting way to experience Niagara Falls. They take you right up to the base of the falls. The excursions depart from docks on the Canadian side and the US side of the river every 15 minutes from 9AM until about 7PM during the summer months. Cost of the ride is about $10. Waterproof outer clothing is provided.

The Canadian side has the best panoramic view of the entire falls and has many commercial tourist attractions. The US side has many nice walks along the rim of the falls, great picnic areas and less commercial tourist attractions. To see them best, you need to view the falls from both sides of the border. Don’t forget your passport!

New York City is located on the eastern coast of the United States about 1000 miles north of Florida and 200 miles South of Boston. It is situated at the mouth of the Hudson River, and is divided into five districts called boroughs. Long Island stretches almost 100 miles to the east of New York City and the state of New Jersey lies just across the Hudson River to the west. The “Big Apple”, as the city is often called, is the largest city in the US with over 7 million residents. It is filled with a diverse mixture of inhabitants including immigrants from many countries. Some of its many neighborhoods, such as Chinatown, Little Italy, and Spanish Harlem reflect the rich ethnic heritages of the resident’s original homelands.
Manhattan and Central Park

The numbered streets of Manhattan all run east-west beginning with First Street just above Greenwich Village, and extending all the way up to 218th Street at the far northern tip of Up-town. Avenues run north-south beginning with First Avenue on the East Side and extending to Twelfth Avenue along the Hudson River on the West Side. These numbered Avenues are interspersed with named Avenues such as Park Avenue, Lexington, Madison and Broadway. Broadway is a bit unusual as it starts out as a typical north-south avenue in the middle of the island downtown, but angles sharply to the west just below Central Park and continues on up the West Side to the top of the island.

Manhattan borough, the business and commercial center of New York City, is situated on a large island in the middle of the Hudson River. Just south of it, across the main harbor, lies the borough of Staten Island, a large residential community. Across the East River branch of the Hudson, the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens are situated on the western tip of Long Island. The borough of Bronx is on the mainland to the north. New Jersey lies across the Hudson to the west.

Staten Island is due south of Manhattan across the main harbor basin. It is most easily reached via the Staten Island ferry from Battery Park on the southern tip of Manhattan. The ferry ride offers spectacular views of the New York skyline and the Statue of Liberty and is absolutely free for all pedestrians. Staten Island has a small town atmosphere with many single-family homes.

If you are visiting New York City, you have a multitude of choices for hotel accommodations.
