Located at the intersection of the Avenue of Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida and the Old Rolly Avenue, Lou Lim Iok Garden is the only famous Suzhou-style garden in Macau. The site of this garden was formerly a farmland and vegetable field, and then bought by the rich merchant Lou Wah Siu (also called Lou Kau). And the son of that merchant Lou Lim Iok began to build the garden according to the advice of Lau Ji Luk (a famous architect in Xiangshan, Guangdong Province). Later on Lou’s family suddenly became impoverished, and the garden was under transaction by several businessmen. By the early period of the 1970s, the government of Macau bought it back and undertook some renovation the garden was open to the public from then on, becoming a good place for the public to take a rest or visit.
Lou Lim Iok Garde -quite delicate in style is the reminiscent of the Suzhou garden. In the garden, there are pools and stone mountains, bridges over flowing streams, pavilions and towers with their shadows reflected in the water, narrow and zigzag corridors, etc. You will absolutely be fascinated by the fantastic Jiangnan (the south and central China) landscapes in the garden.
Stepping into the garden and walking through an arch door, you will see a bamboo thicket, among which there are two trees with beautiful shape and huge-umbrella-like tree crowns. Those are Sphaeropteris lepifera (a rare kind of tree in China), which are listed as one of the second class important protected plants of China.
Stepping forward into the forest trail and walking through a man-made stone cave, you can get to the Chuncao (spring grass) House, which is a residential house on the water. The house was uniquely built to be magnificent with elegant surroundings. Outside of the house is a pool with lotus planted in it, and there are also carps and turtles. If you watch carefully enough, you will find a stone statue of Kwan-yin in a corner of the pool. Nowadays, the Chuncao House has become the very place for the Home Affairs Department of Macau to hold public cultural activities and exhibitions.
Walking forward from the Chuncao House, you can get to the Zigzag Bridge, behind which is a Chinese style pavilion, and besides the pavilion is a stone mountain with a flowing waterfall, people used to call it Exquisite Mountain. You can climb up to the sightseeing deck on the top of the stone mountain, from where you get a panoramic view of the garden.
Macau Maritime Museum was built in 1986 on the proposal of Su Lizhi, the Macau Harbour Master at the time. It opened to the public the next year. Macau Maritime Museum consists of an exhibition building, a maritime museum library and an open-air teahouse. The museum was originally served only as office for the administration of the museum before a new exhibition building was built to accommodate more exhibits.
The new exhibition building, shaped as a sailing vessel and anchored in front of the Barra temple, was completed in 1990.
The exhibition building of the Museum houses one aquarium and three thematic halls exhibiting maritime traditions, maritime history and maritime technology. The Maritime Tradition Hall on the underground floor gives a historical account of the way of life of fishermen in south China and Macau. Its exhibits include nautical equipments and various Chinese sailing boats. Tourists can also see the actual scenes of fishermen making a living, and learn the legend of Barra Temple. The attic floor between the underground floor and the first floor puts on display over ten models of historical Portuguese ships, which are also visually presented by slides shows. The Maritime History Hall guides tourists through historical events influencing China and Portugal from the 15th to 17th Century. Also on display are various navigation instruments and lighthouses. The aquarium features four sub-aquatic environments, where tourists are able to appreciate different species of animals, plants, fish and shells.
With an architectural complex of oriental and western styles existing together, the Historical Centre of Macau is so far the most ancient, the largest, and the most well-preserved historical site in China. Inside the historical centre, there are ruins of the most ancient churches and monasteries, the most ancient Christian burial ground and western emplacement, the first western theater, the first modern lighthouse and the first western university. Altogether there are more than 20 historical sites in the historical centre, including the Ama Temple, Monte Fortress, St. Dominic’s Church and so on.
As the first occupied territory established by European countries in East Asia, the historical centre is the witness of the communication between the western culture and Chinese culture in Macau for more than 400 years. Because of the Chinese and western cultural exchanges, most of the buildings there are endowed with fusional cultural characteristics.
The comments from the World Heritage Committee are as follows: the Historical Centre of Macau is the witness of the development of the western religious culture in Far East regions, and the historical origin of Chinese folk religions, which were then introduced to the western world; and it is the comprehensive integration of Chinese and western architectural styles.
Therefore, this historical centre is the earliest and the most important place that received the most western relics and cultures in China. At the same time, it is the first stop for western architectural styles to be introduced into China in modern times. For this reason, in the 29th World Heritage Committee Meeting, which was held in South African in July 15, 2005, the Historical Centre of Macau was added into the World Heritage List.
Ma Temple, also known as Tianhou Temple, Juehai Temple, and ZhongjueBuddhist Temple, is dedicated to Ma Zu, a diviner who was from Putian, Fujian Province and lived in the Song Dynasty. As a child, Ma Zu showed a talent for predicting the future. She grew up to be nun and died at the age of 28.
Legend has it that after her death Ma Zu’s spirit helped seafaring merchants and fishermen dispel dangers on the roiling sea. So local fishermen in Fujian constructed the A-Ma Temple to commemorate her. Ma Zu was honored as the Queen of Heaven, and later as the Goddess of seafarers in the Qing Dynasty. The words “ A-Ma Temple’ is inscribed on the plaque of the front gate of the Temple, and is flanked on both sides of the gate by couplets that say “Boundless Humanity and Generosity” and “Benefiting all Human beings
The temple consists of a Main Hall, a Stone Hall, the Hongren Hall (the Great Mercy Hall) and the Avalokitesvara (Goddess of Mercy) hall, all laid out in line with traditional Buddhist temple style. A-Ma Temple represents a testimony to the interlinking of the history of Macao and the A-Ma Temple.
A-Ma Temple is highly regarded by the Macanese and worshipped by people from all walks of life every day. Ma Zu’s birthday, 23th in the third lunar month, is marked by religious activities and other celebrations.
The Portuguese translated ‘Ma Kok Miu (A-Ma Temple) in Cantonese to ‘Macau’, a Portuguese name, to refer to the land they landed on. A-Ma Temple is also incorporated into the design of the Macao Dollar, reflecting its special status.
Ruins of St. Paul, usually known as “Great Sanba Archway”, is the historical site of St. Paul Church. Construction of the church began in 1602 and was completed in 1637 with more than 30 years’ effort. It once suffered from three fire accidents. The last one broke out on January 1, 1835 and continued for over two hours. The whole church was almost razed to the ground except the front wall, which was later known as “Great Sanba Archway”.
St. Paul Church was designed by an Italian priest of Jesus Union and constructed by Japanese craftsmen.
The name Sanba comes from the transliteration of Saopavio. As there is a smaller church close to it, the St. Paul Church was therefore named Great Sanba Church so as to make differentiation. Since the front wall of the church after the serious fire accident looks like a traditional Chinese archway and thus called Great Sanba Archway.
Great Sanba Archway is 27 meters tall, 23.5 meters wide, and 2.7 meters thick. The top floor is a triangle lintel under a cross; in the middle of the lintel embeds a copper dove standing for sacred divinity; the dove is surrounded by sun, moon, and stars symbolizing the pregnancy by the Virgin Mary; under a copper dove stands a statue of baby Jesus Christ with the tools that were used to nail him to the cross. The major figures here are the Virgin Marry, the Holy Father, Holy Saint, and Jesus Christ. The next two floors under the top reflect the mission of churchmen. The style of the whole church is that of European Baroque style. The embossments on the architecture, as an integration of western and eastern culture, deliver with force both the western religious art and Chinese traditional stone carving techniques.
The Great Sanba Archway has 68 panels in total. In the basement at the rear lies a Catholic Artistic Museum containing many religious artworks.
With a history dating as far back as 1632 in the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644) it has many similarities with other ancient Chinese temples. It is also known as the site of the first Sino-American treaty, which was signed in 1844.

The Kun Iam Temple has three main shrines situated one behind the other. It consists of the Hall of Sakyamuni, the Buddha of Longevity Hall and the Kun Iam Hall, with several small shrines around these three main halls. Facing the gate of the Buddhist monastery, the Hall of Sakyamuni is dedicated to three gilded statues. The statue of Sakyamuni sits in the middle. A bronze bell, over 300 years old, hangs beside the hall. The Buddha of Longevity adorns the Longevity Hall. Serene and mild, this statue is a symbol of Buddha’s purpose to deliver all living creatures from torment. The Kun Iam Hall is the most important hall of the temple. Kun Iam, dressed in embroidered silk and wearing a crown, is flanked by the Eighteen Buddhas. One of them is said to be carved in the image of Marco Polo, who studied Buddhism in the temple.

At the back of the temple are terraced gardens. The first Sino-American treaty, the Wong Ha (Wangxia) Treaty, was signed on one of the stone desks here. In addition, many calligraphic masterpieces and other cultural relics have been brought together in this temple.
We uses YouTube API Services. https://www.worldtraveldb.com/youtubes-terms-of-service/
