In ancient times, Ancient Huangsiqiao City was named Weiyang City. It was first built in the second year of Chuigong in Tang Dynasty ( 686 A.D. ) This city enjoys a history of more than 1300 years. In 39 of Kangxi in Qing Dynasty ( 1700 A.D. ), the imperial court had set Fenghuang Zhiliting and Ruanyongjing Bingbei Dao to appease and put down minority nationality. In 59 of Qianlong ( 1794 A.D. ), the largest Miao uprising in history broke out here. After this uprising, Qing Dynasty declines. Ancient Huangsiqiao City is a part of the southern Great Wall and is the contended foremost position between Miao people and Han people.

The building of the ancient city is bluestone structure. The city wall is 5.6 meters high, 2.9 meters thick, and 2.4 meters wide. It covers 2900 sq.m. The stones used for building the city are all Qingguang Stones of limestone. Even the smallest stone weights more than 500 kilo. While laying the stones, they use glutinous rice porridge as building starch to fill up the crevice. By this way, the city wall of several hundred meters becomes a unified entity which is firm and durable. In the ancient city, there are three city gates, “Heyu Gate”, “Shicheng Gate”, and“Riguang Gate.”On each of the three gates, there is tall and big gate tower of more than 10 meter’s high that shares the building structure of Qing Dynasty. The roofs of all the three gate towers are in the style of Xieshan. Its lower layer is covered by waist eave. Small blue tiles on it, upturned eaves, and raking angles make the gate tower especially magnificent. The upper part of the city wall is in the shape of saw and chisel. There are 300 arrow battlements and 2 extrusive gun emplacements.
In earlier times, Kongling An was also called Virtue Rock, Stone Bell Mountain, Hanging Bell Rock and Lion Rock. In South and North Dynasty—508 A.D. Emperor Liangwu assigned people to build Kongling Temple, where stood the Kwain-yin statue. So it was also called Kwain-yin Rock.
Kongling An has a long history. In 769-770 A.D. of Tang Dynasty, the famous poet Dupu brought his family here by boat to sight-see Xiangjiang River and visited Kongling An, and he also expressed his wish to settle down here in his poem Odd to Kongling An. In 1804, the Qing Dynasty, Hu Guanjing Built Dugong Pavilion on the right side of Kongling Temple and caved Dupu’s poem Odd to Kongling An on it. The 15th year of Emperor Daoguang (1835 A.D.) the area was enlarged and the pavilion of Kongling Temple was repaired. And in the 5th year of Emperor Guangxu (1879) Feng Jingchuan as the head was responsible for the repair of the pavilion, and the size was enlarged again, it formed Kongling Temple, Long Whistle House, King hiding Cabinet and Dupu Hall. Later Peng Yulling presented plum blossoms and caved them in the stone, and the Plum Blossom Pavilion was built. In the first year of Republic of China (1912), Liu Yixue, Deng Guangqiao proposed to repair the pavilion. And in 1936, Du Zhenyuan collected money to repair Kongling Temple. But because of the war and denudation, Kongling Temple resulted in disrepair in 1968.
The burning incense is dense in Kongling Temple and its reputation spread far off. There once a lot of high officials coming here to improvise poems. In October, 1987, Tang Yingtao, the Hunanese-Taiwanese, suggested by Xiao Boliang, member of Ai Mi prefectural Committee of CPPCC (Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference), organized overseas Chinese to denote to rebuild Kongling Temple, and prefectural government appointed Mo Gaoyao to organize people to repair. Along the rock built gate, plank road, Three Saint Temple, Lection Storing Building, Daxiong Temple, Bell and Drum Pavilion, and monk huts, which covered 960 m2. The red wall and golden tile were very magnificent. Vice-premier Fang Yi inscribed the stele on which the Chinese characters Kongling An, vice president of Committee of CPPCC and president of Chinese Buddhists Association Zhao Pu inscribed the stele of Tree Saint Temple, inscription calligrapher Li Li inscribed the stele on which Chinese character Buddhist spirit spreads, and national famous calligrapher Li Feng inscribed the golden stele of Daxiong Temple.
The temple was built in Tang Dynasty. After six times of fire, sixteen times of enlargement and repair in Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was built to be today’s size in 1882 AD (the eighth year of Guangxu Emperor, Qing Dynasty). It covers an area of 9,8000 square meters. The temple is of nine layers and four courtyards. It consists of Jiuxing Door, Kuixing Pavilion, Yubei Pavilion, Jiaying Door, Yushu House, Main Hall, Bedroom, east and west side doors and four turrets. The Main Hall is the main body of the building, with the largest scale, which is also called Big Hall or Shengdi Hall. It is 24 meters high, with 72 stone stelae, symbolizing the 72 peaks of Southern Sacred Mountain. The wood carving of jumping dragon and flying phoenix under the eaves and the wood carving on the door are very delicate. On the stone stelae around the main hall, there are 144 white marble basso-relievo carved in 1705 AD (the 44th year of Kangxi Emperor in Qing Dynasty). On the stone stairs in front of the palace, there embedded a white stone dragon. The ancient painted pottery and colored drawing in the roof and corridor are also very fine. With red walls and turret, the temple is surrounded with brook and spring. In the west side, there are eight Buddhist temples, while in the east there are eight temple of Daoism. There are hundred of stele carvings in the temple. Every 15th, August, there are grand temple fair here. Many believers home and abroad come here to worship the god.
