Luhuitou Park itself is situated on Luhuitou Mountain near the seashore, about 4 kilometers from the city of Sanya, the island’s second-largest city, not its capital (that privilege is held by the city of Haikou… Sanya, in the meantime holds a more enviable privilege: it is China’s only tropical city). The main peak on Luhuitou Mountain (“Luhuitou Hill” might be a more apt designation), which is synonymous with Luhuitou Peninsula, has an altitude of 275 meters. The “hill”/ peninsula/ park gets its name from the fact that it is roughly in the shape of a deer that is looking back over its shoulder. There is a very romantic local Li nationality legend (besides the usual mix of Han Chinese, Hui, etc. (Hainan Island was a place of exile – a sort of Siberia, or Limoges – during China’s imperial past), there is a large contingent of Li and Miao nationalities on Hainan Island) which explains how this phenomenon came to be, but that story is best told by the natives themselves.

Luhuitou Park has numerous winding paths offering refreshing strolls with some spectacular views. The panoramic views from “Luhuitou Hill” are perhaps the best reason to visit the peninsula. There is also an observation station here, named after Halley’s Comet, and a number of other scenic sites such as Monkey Mountain, Deer House, Turtle Heaven, Immortal Pond, and of course the 9 by 12 meter statue commemorating the aforementioned romantic “Deer Looking Back” legend. And then there is the island’s food specialty that can be tasted everywhere: the red coconut.

In Luhuitou Bay below one can go scuba diving. Here one will find a whole range of colorful fish in all sizes, as well as the usual coral scenery and other fascinating underwater treasures that are only found in a tropical climate. And speaking of climate, Hainan Island is regarded as having the best climate in all of China, and its air quality is second only to that on Hawaii, which ranks as the best air quality in the world. Sanya is also known for its laid-back atmosphere. All of which makes a visit to Sanya and Luhuitou Park the perfect holiday destination for everyone from the solitary hiker in search of a bit of not-so-rugged solace to honeymooning couples in search of a beautiful, unhurried setting in which to celebrate their union.

The beach itself is warm, yet not baking, with an average year-round temperature of 25½ degrees Celsius (78 degrees Fahrenheit), and with only slight variations from season to season. For example, during the coldest “winter” period, the temperature dips only 3½ degrees Celsius, to about 22 degrees Celsius (71½ degrees Fahrenheit). Farther landward are palm trees and the peanut tree (Sterculia Quadrifida) common to tropical climates and which provides ample natural shade, as well as the ubiquitous Chinese red pine. There are also plenty of rare flowers and grasses here, as well as other unusual tropical plants. Besides swimming beaches, there are also stretches of beach with odd rocks and unusual shoals for those who prefer a more contemplative seaside stroll.

The ancient Yazhou City has a long history and has many scenic spots. Before the Ning Dynasty, this ancient city was an earth city. Brick walls started to be built in the fourth year of the Qingyuan Period of the Southern Ning Dynasty. It became a relatively large city of Hainan Island after three expansions in the Yuan Dynasty, Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty. Since the Tang Dynasty, several officials and celebrities have been circumvented by treacherous court officials and exiled to ancient Yazhou City. There were as many as fourteen officials, only counting the ones with a position above vice prime minister (in feudal China), including Wei Zhiyi and Tang Yuan of the Tang Dynasty, Ding Wei, Zhao Ding, Lu Duoxun and Hu Quan of the Ning Dynasty, Wang Shixi of the Yuan Dynasty and Wang Ge and Zhao Qian of the Ming Dynasty. As a result, Yazhou City is also called the “Home of Anchorets”.

When Monk Jianzhen, a famous monk of the Tang Dyansty, was hit by typhoon on his fifth sailing to Japan in the seventh year of the Tianbao Period of the Tang Dynasty, his ship ended up at Yazhou City. There Jianzhen helped to build the Great Cloudy Temple. He had a great number of Buddhist classics that he prepared to take to Japan. This became a colorful part of the history of Yazhou culture. The legendary Huang Daopo, a female cotton spinning revolutionist of the Yuan Dynasty, also lived in Shuinan Village of Yazhou City for nearly forty years.
The city gate of Yazhou City has been repaired completely and looks new and magnificent, attracting large numbers of tourists from home and abroad. There is also another world famous scenic spot: the Big and Small Cave. Its shape is like a huge turtle that stands by the sea and surrounding this scenic spot are beautiful tree clad mountains of various heights. The shape of the mountains and stones are very unusual and special. The green trees seem particularly vigorous amongst star-like wild licorice and narrow streams. Reading Yard” was established here. The Big and Small Cave is on the coast at the south western foot of Aomen.
What makes this place especially amazing are two pools close to each other, the Jade Wall Hot Springs. In the past, one pool had half warm and half cold water, while the other one was full of hot water. However, the warm water cooled down and the boiling water became warm, just the right temperature for a bath. In the Zhengde Period of the Ming Dynasty a stone wall was built to protect the hot spring, but it collapsed as time passed by. In the fifteenth year of the Guangxu Period of the Qing Dynasty, Tang Yiyuan of Zhizhou resorted to reconstruction and established the Jiji Pavilion. Although the pavilion was destroyed, the hot spring still exists and is as clean as a mirror, suitable for bathing all year long.
