Kennedy Spacecenter Visitor Complex. The John F. Kennedy space center is located on the central Atlantic coast of Florida about 50 miles (75 km) due east of Orlando and midway between Miami and Jacksonville. The actual spaceport and launch facilities are located on nearby Cape Canaveral, a vast peninsula with restricted public access. The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, just outside of the cape is open to the public daily from 9 AM until 5 PM. It includes many exhibits, films and displays, plus it offers opportunities to tour the actual spaceport and launch facility.

Bus tours of the Kennedy Spaceport Launch Complex depart from the visitor center at frequent intervals and are included with your admission. The tours take you to the huge vehicle assembly building where the gigantic rockets are fully assembled prior to launch, to the huge crawler platforms that slowly transport the fully assembled rockets several miles out to the launch sites, and to views of one of the launch platforms.

The admission prices are $29 for adults and $19 for children. That includes access to all exhibits and films plus a bus tour of the spaceport and launch facility. Normally, tickets are readily available at the space center or you can purchase them on line from this web page: www.kennedyspacecenter.com/groupsCorporate/index.asp

You can watch an actual space launch if you are in the area on the right date. It is possible to park along the highway (with thousands of other spectators) several miles from the cape and see the rocket liftoff and disappear into space. You can no longer get passes that permit you to park along the causeway on the cape due to new security precautions. If you are really eager to see a launch up-close, you can go to the Space Center web site and purchase one of the limited number of launch viewing passes that allow you to view the launch from a special visitors area on the cape.

For an extra twenty dollars, you can choose one of the “NASA Up Close” tours that are narrated by an expert guide. All of the tours are restricted on launch days, so you should check the launch schedule before planning your visit. Florida Beaches. There are a lot of beaches to choose from in Florida. The state is surrounded by ocean on three sides and has over 800 miles of beach front with thousands of miles of additional shoreline on the many bays and inlets. As is common along most of the eastern coast of the US, the Florida beaches are usually located on long narrow islands or sand bars separated from the mainland by back bays or salt water marshes. The beaches are usually accessible via long bridges or causeways.

It would be impractical to describe every beach in Florida, so we will limit this page to some general descriptions. The beaches can be categorized into three general locations: the Atlantic beaches, the Gulf Coast beaches and the Florida Keys.

The Atlantic Coast beaches on the eastern shores of the state offer the best surf and attract the most tourists. Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, Daytona and Jacksonville are the most popular. They offer high rise hotels, nightspots, and plenty of tourist diversions. If you seek excitement, entertainment and nightlife these are good beaches for you. If you want more sedate accommodations, you might prefer Cocoa beach or the Saint Augustine area.

The Gulf Coast beaches on the western coast offer warmer, calmer waters and great sunsets. Clearwater beach, just outside the Tampa – Saint Petersburg area, is the only highly commercialized beach on the Gulf coast. The remaining beaches tend to attract more full time residents and “snow birds” or visitors seeking to escape the usual tourist crowds.

The Florida keys, as they call the archipelago of tropical isles that stretch more than a hundred miles south of Florida into the Gulf of Mexico, offer some unique beaches. They are extremely shallow with rough coral bottoms and calm crystal clear water. It is possible to wade out hundreds of meters from shore in the shallow waters and watch the colorful fishes swim around your feet. Snorkeling and fishing are the favorite activities in the keys.

Universal Studios Escape is a resort complex with two theme parks, a Citiwalk shopping, dining and entertainment area and three hotels. The two theme parks are the original Universal Studios Florida and the new Islands of Adventure. Universal Studios Florida is a movie theme park containing rides and attractions based on movies and television shows, as well as some behind the scenes looks at movie and television making techniques. The park is similar in nature to Disney’s MGM studios.
Toon Lagoon

All of these hotels will be located in the Universal Escape Resort with easy access to the parks. Guests at Universal hotels enjoy a number of benefits including early theme park admission on select days and front-of-the-line access until 10:00AM for some of the more popular rides. Other benefits include room-charging privileges throughout the resort and package deliveries to your room.

Islands of Adventure is a new fantasy theme park, similar in layout to Disney’s Magic Kingdom, but with some notable differences. The entire park is filled with completely new high-tech rides, attractions, restaurants and shops. It is super clean, very functional and filled with the latest technology. The park is divided into several themed areas including Marvel Super Hero Island and Jurassic Park. Two of the areas, Toon Lagoon and Seuss Landing, are particularly suited for younger visitors.

Disney World. Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida is not just a theme park, but a huge resort complex covering 47 square miles. The resort contains four separate theme parks, three water parks and 99 holes of golf on several different courses. Miles of outdoor recreation are available including hiking, biking, boating and swimming. It has three separate areas containing shopping, dining and entertainment facilities as well as a fourth area with nightclubs. A fairly new addition to the resort is the state of the art sports complex where Disney hosts a wide variety of sporting events. Finally, there are about 18 Disney owned and operated hotels and several non-Disney hotels in the resort. All this combined with many other attractions in the Orlando and central Florida area can be quite overwhelming.
Cinderella’s Castle

No other Disney resort comes close to the size and diversity of Disney World Florida. If you have previously visited one of the other Disney resorts such as Disneyland California, Disneyland Paris or the new Disneyland Tokyo, you should still visit Disney World in Orlando, Florida. All other Disney resorts consist of a single theme park and are quite small compared to the massive resort complex in Florida. Each of the other parks are no larger than the Magic Kingdom theme park in Disney World, which is only one small part of the complex. Remember, that only the resort in Orlando, Florida is referred to as Disney World or Walt Disney World. The other parks are usually called Disneyland. The size and diversity of the Disney World resort ensures that it will probably remain the number one vacation destination in the world for years to come.

Magic Kingdom, the first theme park built at the resort, has rides, shows and attractions divided among seven fantasy areas. This is the place to find all your favorite Disney characters and attractions.

Disney World offers lots of outdoor recreation. It has five challenging 18-hole golf courses as well as a 9-hole beginner’s course and a 36-hole miniature golf course for family fun. If you prefer tennis there are many courts throughout the resort including Disney’s Contemporary Resort Racquet Club. Water sports are plentiful including water-skiing, parasailing, fishing and many types of boat rental. For the extremely adventurous, there is the Richard Petty driving experience where you can drive an actual Nascar racing car. The car has about 600 hp and can attain speeds of up to 160 mph.

Epcot, the second theme park built at the resort, is divided into two areas: Future World and World Showcase. The attractions in Future World are based on modern and futuristic advances in communication, transportation, energy, agriculture and much more. World Showcase allows you to explore culture, cuisine, shopping and entertainment from many countries including Canada, UK, France, Japan, Morocco, US, Italy, Germany, China, Norway and Mexico.

Tampa, Saint Petersburg and Clearwater. Tampa, Saint Petersburg and the beachside community of Clearwater are all located around Tampa Bay on the western coast of central Florida. They are within two hours drive of Orlando, Disney World, Universal Studios and the surrounding entertainment complexes. This is a popular beach resort area for families that come to Florida to see the Orlando attractions.

Tampa attractions include the Tampa Museum of Art, the Children’s Museum of Tampa, the Museum of Science and Industry, the History Center, the Zoological Gardens and the Museum of African-American Art. St. Petersburg offers the Salvador Dali Museum, the Museum of History, several art galleries and numerous parks. Clearwater has an aquarium.

The Gulf Coast along the western side of the Florida Peninsula has a very different character than the eastern Atlantic Coast. The fine sand beaches are equally nice on both coasts, but they are usually shallower with warmer waters on the Gulf side. There is very little surf on the gulf, so it attracts fewer young revelers and has less wild amusements. The gulf coast is favored by family vacationers and retired folks.

Of course, the Tampa Bay area’s most popular attractions are its white sand Beaches especially those in Clearwater or the quieter beaches in St. Petersburg and the northern suburban communities. Fishing is another popular activity. The large marina, located near the Clearwater side of the causeway, has numerous excursion boats and fishing charters. You can spend a half-day fishing on the Gulf for as little as $25 or you can rent a six-passenger charter for $700. The boats will provide all of the tackle and will even clean your catch, while a nearby restaurant can cook it for you. If you prefer fresh water fishing, there are also many inland charters in the area.

In any month, there are usually 22 sunny days, a real cure for the gloom of winter.
Ringling Museum

Leaving Sarasota behind won’t be easy. However, traveling one-hour north up the coast of Florida brings you to Tampa, home of Busch Gardens. At this African-theme park, kids of all ages can enjoy themselves on the newest and largest double-dueling, wooden roller coaster in the Southeast, christened Gwazi.

There are two international airports near the City of Sarasota: Tampa International (one hour north of Sarasota) and Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (just northeast of town). There are buses, taxis, limousines and car rental services at both airports to get you into the city.

Panama City, Florida. The northwestern extension of Florida that stretches along the Gulf Coast is usually called the “Panhandle of Florida”. It is less developed than other parts of the state with sparser population and vast expanses of wild pine forests. The climate is a bit cooler than the southern parts of Florida but it still offers mild winters, hot summers and pleasant spring and fall weather. Its beaches are magnificent with warm shallow waters and fine white sand. The Panhandle attracts fewer tourists, and remains a favorite “undiscovered” vacation spot for local vacationers and retired couples from the northern states.

Due to its somewhat isolated location far from the popular tourist attractions of south and central Florida, Panama City has remained relatively unspoiled by the tourist crowds. The beachfront is not dominated by an unbroken wall of high-rise tourist hotels, and there is still plenty of public access to its beautiful beaches. You can actually find affordable lodging in small hotels and motels right on the beach. There are a small number of exclusive high-rise condominiums along the beach and several more are under construction. Evidently, people are beginning to discover the unique charms of Panama City Beach, so it may not remain unspoiled much longer.

Panama City is located along the coast of the Florida Panhandle about 350 miles northwest of Orlando, Florida and approximately 350 miles east of New Orleans, Louisiana. It has a small airport with limited access via commuter flights. There is a much broader selection of flights going to Fort Walton Beach, sixty miles to the west, to Pensacola, one hundred miles to the west or to Tallahassee 120 miles to the northeast.

Shopping is somewhat limited along the beach with most of the shopping malls and major stores located along Panama City Parkway and within Panama City.

Panama City is a small seaside community with a population of approximately 35,000. It has several large marinas in town and lies adjacent to one of the finest beaches in Florida. Panama City Beach begins just west of the city and extends for more than twenty miles along the Gulf of Mexico. Its beaches are renown for their fine white sand often called “sugar sand” and for the deep azure-green waters that give this area its nickname of “the Emerald Coast” Many travel authorities have rated the beaches of Panama City among the best in the world.

Orlando, Florida. Orlando is located in central Florida 75 miles northeast of Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater Beach. It is 50 miles due west of Cape Canaveral, the Kennedy Space Center and Cocoa Beach. Best known as the home of Disney World, this city is also the center of the largest concentration of family entertainment attractions in the world.

The climate in central Florida is semi-tropical. Summers are oppressively hot and humid with almost daily afternoon Thunderstorms. Winters are pleasantly mild with sunny weather and comfortable temperatures. Hurricane season, between August and December, can produce some unpleasant weather on the rare occasion when a tropical storm chances to veer inland in the immediate vicinity. Many US families brave the heat and flock to Orlando during the summer school holidays from the beginning of June until the end of August. They invariably fill the hotels, amusement parks and restaurants with hordes of raucous children. Adult vacationers and retired folks usually choose the winter months of December through March to visit Orlando. The off seasons in the fall and spring are often the best times to visit.

Airport buses provide convenient, inexpensive transportation to downtown Orlando and an airport van service provides quick transport to the International Drive area hotels.

Two major airports serve the Orlando area. Orlando International Airport is located 8 miles southeast of downtown. It has numerous daily fights to major cities throughout the USA. Orlando Sanford Airport is situated about 15 miles north of downtown. It serves numerous charter airlines from overseas destinations. The Tampa St. – Petersburg airport is less than two-hour drive to the west and the Melbourne airport is a bit over an hour to the east.

Miami, Florida. Miami is located on the Atlantic coast of Florida at the southern tip. It is warm year around and usually very hot and humid during the summer months. Most tourists prefer to visit during October through April. Outdoor sports and swimming are open all seasons, so be sure to take your swimming suit and plenty of cool clothing. A sun hat and a good sunscreen are essential even in the winter months. In Miami, dress is always casual, with sundresses, jeans or walking shorts appropriate during the day. Hundreds of thousands of Hispanic immigrants from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Central America and South America have settled in Miami. Spanish is spoken almost everywhere in the city. Many signs are in both English and Spanish especially those near the Latin district known locally as “Little Havana”. Cubans originally settled in the area around Calle Ocho Street (Southwest Eighth Street) more than 20 years ago. Today, this colorful area embraces immigrants from all over Latin America.
