Banff & Jasper
Monumental frozen spires dip dramatically into lush green valleys and turquoise lakes. The pure mountain air fills your lungs with a rejuvenating essence. As you reach a cupped hand toward the rush of water roaring down the cliffside, a sudden flash of white catches your attention. You look up only to find a big horn sheep perched on an invisible ledge staring right back. Reaching back to the falls, the pure, crisp taste of glacial run-off refreshes your spirit with its icy sting. Down in the valley, a moose swims valiantly across a pristine lake, sending out a few gentle ripples on an otherwise glass-smooth surface.

Majestic doesn’t even begin to describe this place. It’s like Nature saved her finest jewels for Banff and Jasper. It’s the kind of place you think only exists in photographs – which is a shame, really. Photographs don’t nearly do it justice.

Slivers of light sneak through cracks in the wooden planks of the old covered bridge. You tighten your grip on the handlebars of your bike as it rattles toward the light at the end of the tunnel. Out the other side, your picturesque autumn day resumes with a stunning view of rolling forests and farmlands, fiery foliage and bright green pastures.

Though you enjoy meandering through this idyllic panorama, you do have a mission in mind. Somewhere over the hills is an abbey where Benedictine monks make award-winning cheeses – and where, before the day is done, you hope to purchase extravagant amounts of the Roquefort that bewitched you at dinner the night before.
Tucked into the Appalachian foothills, the quiet hamlets east of Montreal known as the Eastern Townships make cozy getaways any time of year. The hearty smell of wood smoke hangs in the air. Haute cuisine seduces your taste buds in the casual setting of quaint country inns. Landscapes both rural and rugged provide ample opportunity for discovery and adventure.

At first, the lanky cowboy in black seems in control, one hand on the rope, the other stretched out behind him. But the angry bull beneath him won’t stand for it. Hind legs buck high into the air and the rider’s body ripples like a whip, his head snapping backwards. You grip the bench and lurch forward in your seat. Hang on, man! Another powerful kick and the rider is thrown face down into the dusty corral. Ouch, seems like an understatement. Wiping a fleck of dust from your face, you adjust your crisp, white Stetson and mosey on back to the beer garden.

The spirit of the Old West lives on in Calgary, where the cowboy hat is just as fashionable on the ranch as it is in the boardroom. But rest assured, you don’t need a big hat or spurs to fit in here. A big heart and a soft spot for a great steak will do fine.

For family-friendly adventure and a rich blend of English and Acadian tradition, head to Moncton, located at the crossroads of the Maritimes.

Tidal bores and seaside views
Perhaps the area’s greatest natural attraction is the Bay of Fundy—home to the world’s highest tides. See the dramatic tidal bores created by the surging tides at
Petitcodiac River.
Visit Cape Enrage for what Frommers Guide describes as the best view in Canada. And take time to explore Fundy National Park’s stunning seaside cliffs, tidal marshes, rocky shores and tidal flats.
Beaches, dunes and parklands
Fabulous beaches, with the warmest waters east of the Carolinas, and world-class national parks are only a short drive away.
Head 100 km north, stopping at the white sand Dune of Bouctouche en route to Kouchibouguac National Park, where you can canoe, bike, kayak or picnic on the beach. The park includes dramatic vistas of bogs, salt marshes, tidal rivers, sheltered lagoons and tall forests. You can also explore some 60 km of hiking trails.
Parlee Beach Provincial Park boasts some of the warmest saltwater north of Virginia and is a great place to play, picnic and swim.

Acadian culture is celebrated with pride at Le Pays de la Sagouine, a real Acadian village offering theatre, music, comedy and dance—all hosted by lively, costumed characters.
Situated at the head of the Bay of Fundy, visit the stone ruins and grassy ramparts of Fort Beauséjour – Fort Cumberland National Historic Site, recalling an era when England and France fought for supremacy in Acadia. Built by the French in 1751, Fort Beauséjour fell to the British and colonial forces in June 1755, who renamed it Fort Cumberland.

Bright rays of sunshine stream in obliquely through rounded windows high above the market stalls. The sharp smell of aged cheddar mixes with the sweet fragrance of homemade pastries and the briny aroma of fresh seafood straight from the wharf. As battered halibut and hand-cut fries sizzle in metal baskets, you take note of the unusual, but elegant, design of the ceiling.

The affable cook tells you with a chuckle that they built the Old City Market like an inverted boat because the seafaring residents of this city just didn’t know how to build anything else. You smile at this local myth, but the finely hewn beams and dovetailed joints tell you they knew exactly what they were doing.
Some things change fast in Saint John. The tide rises 28 feet in 12 hours. The river flows two different directions in the same day. But the Market bell still rings twice a day and the locals haven’t lost their love of the sea, nor their down-to-earth charm.
