Located 52 kilometres north of Geraldton and 474 kilometres north of Perth via the Brand Highway, Northampton is a small and attractive town in undulating country on the edge of the wheat belt. Springtime is wildflower time in historic Northampton when the area becomes a blaze of colour. Use the town and its range of accommodation as a base to explore the surrounding countryside and its amazing floral displays. Northampton is one of the oldest settlements in Western Australia outside of Perth. It was declared a town site in 1864, some 20 years after rich copper deposits were discovered at Wanerenooka Hill. The town was awarded ‘Historical Town’ status by the National Trust in 1993. The Northampton/Horrocks Beach/Port Gregory area is also steeped in historical significance, from Aboriginal cave paintings near the Bowes River mouth to the various buildings constructed by convicts in the 19th century. There is a range of accommodation available including bed and breakfast, backpackers, hotel/motels, a caravan park and farm and station stays. Dining is available at hotels, a nearby historic homestead, a cafe, and takeaway outlets. To find out more please visit our website www.northamptonwa.com.au

Payne’s Find, located 420 kilometres from Perth on the Great Northern Highway, with its small community of no more than 15 people, marks the centre of pastoral and goldmining activity. A gold crushing plant for extracting gold, new gold discoveries and the reworking of old mine sites have rejuvenated the area. Paynes find takes its name from prospector Thomas Payne, who was the first to register a lease for gold mining with the Mines Department. As a reward for discovering gold in the area he was not charged to put a crushing of gold bearing ore through the State Government Battery. This was also the first crushing. During the 1930’s, about 500 people lived with their families, prospecting for gold by underground and dry blowing, hoping to strike it rich. During World War 1 many men were called away leaving only a few families remaining. In 1987 the State Government Battery was sold to the Taylor family and is still operating, today as the Paynes Find Gold Battery, and is now a popular tourist attraction. A display centre is next to the battery.

In the heart of the hills, Mundaring is a short 35 minute drive from the City of Perth. The community is warm, friendly, multicultural and welcoming, enriched by the traditions of past generations and days gone by. Mundaring is home to the amazing engineering feat of the Mundaring Weir, where the Golden Pipeline starts its journey to Kalgoorlie Boulder. Water is pumped 560 kilometres from Mundaring Weir in peaceful Helena River Valley to Kalgoorlie. Following wet winters, the dramatic sight of the Mundaring Weir overflowing draws sightseers and residents alike to the valley. It was at Mundaring that bushranger Moondyne Joe roamed among the tall jarrah trees and scaled the rocky outcrops of what is now John Forrest National Park on the side of Greenmount Hill. Wildlife abounds and beautiful birds and wildflowers can be found right throughout the Shire. Cyclists and walkers can enjoy the heritage trails running through small picturesque villages including Darlington, Glen Forrest, Parkerville and Chidlow. You can also go horse riding, canoeing or play a round of golf. Magnificent gardens are open to the public in spring and autumn. Cultural, orchestral and pop concerts held in a unique bushland setting are a feature of many summer evenings. The outdoor cinema screens fabulous movies under the stars in the warmer months. In spring the bush is alive with colour, with native flora including kangaroo paws, spider orchids, leschenaultias and hoveas. Visitors can enjoy an early morning walk as the mist rises in the treetops and the joyful laughter of the kookaburra heralds a new day. These are the sights and sounds of the bush which ‘feed the souls’ of local artists, authors and artisans. A pastime much enjoyed by many visitors is browsing through the local craft shops or paying a visit to one of the galleries and studios exhibiting local fine art. With Mundaring’s tourism being predominantly nature based, there are many facilities and outdoor activities to enjoy in the area: walk trails, Lake Leschenaultia, John Forrest National Park, Mundaring Weir and the Golden Pipeline, wildlife sanctuaries and a marsupial hospital. A range of food is available from a la carte restaurants, cafes and take away outlets. Hotels, farm and homestay properties, as well as cottage accommodation, offer overnight or longer term bed and breakfast facilities. Guests may choose to sample fine wines at local wineries or enjoy a meal at one of the many excellent restaurants throughout the Hills.

Kalgoorlie and Boulder amalgamated in 1989. Up till then they were two towns lying side by side. Boulder’s main street, Burt Street, is five kilometres from Kalgoorlie’s main street, Hannan Street. Boulder was named after “The Great Boulder Mine”, the first mine on the Golden Mile. A walk along Burt Street is a walk through living history. Beautiful reminders such as the Town Hall with the Goatcher Curtain, the Miners Monument, Goldfields War Museum and the Loopline Railway Station set amongst the shopping precinct makes for an enjoyable morning. Boulder Market Day falls on the third Sunday of each month and is a busy mix of displays, stalls, entertainment and tours. Tour the surrounds of the Golden Mile in the old train which once carried hundreds of miners to work each day. This busy railway has now been overtaken by the expanding Super Pit. Train departs daily from Boulder Station at 1000. Kalgoorlie-Boulder is living history, with the past conspicuous in every part of the City. The architecture, the pubs, the pictures on the wall, the wide streets, the houses in the suburbs and the signs on the shop fronts all give glimpses of a glorious past.
